When Life Changes Your Plans

Don’t you wonder how many times you’ve planned something only to have it not work out or be interrupted by something else? Too numerous to count, right?

On a recent trip to Hawaii after publishing AS WE FORGIVE THOSE a month earlier, I decided to put some thought into my next novel which I’d roughly planned. But nothing more came to mind. Meanwhile, a completely different story came through and it was set in Hawaii. I’d heard a few times when firsting writing some years ago, Hawaiian stories weren’t really popular because readers wouldn’t resonate with them. And after all, if I wrote a book set in the midwest where I’m from, it would be a new world to readers from elsewhere, but one they could relate with.

But how do you not write a book that comes to you so vividly as I experienced? Having no computer or notebook along, I used the hotel stationary to jot down thoughts as they came along, so I wouldn’t forget anything. And so my new novel was born.

What are your thoughts and opinions of a novel set in Hawaii?

Do you think going with your gut instinct overrules other suggestions?Copy of SDC10228

Unlocking Doors for Human Trafficking

As I write this, several people have suddenly gone missing in Iowa. I see Facebook comments that people are so kindly sharing. And questions such as “What’s going on in Iowa?” and “Many young Native Americans girls are missing in northern Minnesota.” The list goes on.

While some missing persons are found, many are not. Human trafficking-modern day slavery is alive and well-established as a lucrative business.

I attended a seminar in LaCrosse, Wisconsin a year ago, and was shocked to learn there are networks of roads used, online products sold to support them by forced labor, and even door-to-door sales.

It made such an impression on me, I decided to incorporate a bit of it in some of my fictional work in progress. But why stop there? If I call myself a writer, this is an important enough issue to blog, in my opinion.

Facts:

There are 20.9 million victims worldwide, with estimates as high as 45 million persons.

The U.S. Department of Labor has identified 139 goods from 75 countries made by forced and child labor.

Children make up almost a third of victims, while women and girls comprise 71% of victims.

Land, Sea, Sky and Mankind

Image

I love this photo of the Atlantic Ocean, Florida beach, and beautiful sky. It captures land, sea, and sky. If you wonder why the title also includes the word mankind, take a closer look at the horizon below the center cloud. There’s a small sailboat drifitng by.

We live in this infinite universe, but small as we are in comparison to the earth, let alone our Milky Way Galaxy and outer space, we all have a story.

I don’t know the story of the people on the sailboat, or even who they are, but they could’ve been the characters in my current novel, working title AS WE FORGIVE THOSE, now that I think about it.

There are lots of messages in the novel, and I hope at least one of them will speak to you.

Don’t forget everyone has a story to tell, and I hope you will nourish yours for someone who wants or needs to hear it.

What is your Favorite Tree?

I recently updated my cover photo for my Facebook page from a zen garden view, to palm trees. I got to thinking about an interview I’d seen on television several years ago with Katharine Hepburn. When asked what species of tree she was most like, she said a large oak. I thought it sounded appropriate for her.

With so many beautiful trees in the world, it’s hard to pick just one that’s your favorite, but for me, I’d say the palm tree. Why? Because they can bend with the wind, I love the sounds of the fronds in the wind and they’re beautiful. Okay, and they’re synonymous with warm weather, which is probably a big part of the reason I’ve always enjoyed them.

This photo is one I took in a botanical garden filled with numerous palm species from throughout the world.

Now, I’d like to hear what your favorite tree is.
